AIMS OF THE TESOL COURSE

The TESOL course is for individuals who want to teach others how to speak English. This course is internationally recognised and will allow you to teach whilst travelling the world. INTESOL MENA has exclusive rights to offer this fully accredited INTESOL Certificate in TESOL.

ACHIEVEMENTS FROM THE TESOL COURSE

On completion of the course you will:

• develop an understanding of vocabulary in context
• have developed an awareness of various teaching methodologies of TESOL
• improve understanding of and be able to apply teaching skills
• improve understanding of meta language related to TESOL
• identify the form, functions and learner challenges related to teaching tenses and other aspects in English
• identify the contexts that English tenses, its aspects and grammar are used in
• use phonology to identify and assist in correcting learner pronunciation problems

       COURSE SYLLABUS

Structure:

The course covers 4 units with a total of 10 modules. There is NO written examination.

Course Details:

• language (English grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary)
• the basic principles of TESOL
• the teaching of reading and writing
• the teaching of speaking and listening
• making and using visual aids
• identifying and correcting student errors
• classroom management

A 4 UNIT COURSE LEADING TO THE CERTIFICATE IN TESOL

Unit 1: Self Study Unit

At the end of this unit you will:

• know the importance of planning your study
• know that there are ways of working which aid your memory
• have set out a timetable for your course
• have given yourself the best chance of fulfilling your potential

Unit 2: The Study of English

Grammar

At the end of this unit you will:

• be able to find your way around grammar
• have more understanding of grammatical terminology
• understand the importance of knowing grammar

Pronunciation, Stress and Intonation

At the end of this unit you will:

• understand the importance of teaching pronunciation
• have some ideas on how to do this

Lexis

At the end of this unit you will:

• have more understanding of the difficulties ESOL students face in their choice of vocabulary
• understand the importance of teaching appropriate language
• have a basic understanding of the formation of words and their relationships
• have begun to think more deeply about the language you are going to teach

Unit 3: Basic Principles of TESOL

At the end of this unit you will:

• have a basic understanding of the principles of good ESOL teaching
• understand the importance of a caring environment in the classroom
• know why lack of consideration of these principles could hinder language prodduction and progress
• understand the need for communicative teaching
• have some ideas of the concept of communication  versus correctness

Reading and Writing

At the end of this unit you will:

• be able to identify a range of skills needed for successful reading
• know ways of training learners to develop those skills
• be able to identify  learning challenges with successful writing
• be able to train students in the skills neded for effective writing

Listening and Speaking

At the end of this unit you will:

• understand why learners have difficulty with listening
• be able to help students to develop liistening skills
• understand some of the learning challenges students experience when speaking
• be able to teach oral skills

The Teaching and Learning of ESOL

At the end of this unit you will:

• recognize a variety of aids
• understand the importance of 'need first' teaching and be able to prepare your own aids

Error

At the end of this unit you will:

• recognize errors
• have some understanding of why students make them
• be able to prepare useful remedial exercises

Unit 4: Lesson Planning

Classroom Management

At the end of this unit you will:

• understand the overall aim of TESOL
• know how to facilitate communication
• know techniques that encourage students to listen and learn
• know techniques that encourage students to speak

Lesson Stages and Plans

At the end of this unit you will:

• know the importance of dividing an ESOL lesson into separate  parts
• know the role of the teacher at each stage
• understand the importance of adequate planning
• be able to write a detailed lesson plan
